Our Mission: 

Motivate non-partisan civic activism in our community, joining nationwide efforts to protect 

our democracy, serving all people equally. 

Our Vision: 

Democratic government, free of special privilege, with liberty and justice for all. 

Our group agrees with, and promises to uphold these five INDIVISIBLE PRINCIPLES:

1. Remake our democracy: We recognize our democracy was rigged from the start in favor of the white and wealthy. We actively work to realize a shared vision of a real democracy — of, by, and for the people.

2. Embrace progressive values: We model inclusion, respect, and fairness in all of our actions.

3. Coordinate and collaborate: We partner with other Indivisible groups on advocacy, elections, and national Indivisible campaigns.

4. Build a strong and strategic movement: We focus our efforts to maximize our impact, winning progressive policy victories and taking power at the local, state, and federal levels.

5. Nonviolent actions and events: All events and actions will be nonviolent.

 We are glad you found us and are checking out our website. We are the Steering Committee of Indivisible Polk Foothills, and this is our story:

 The outcome of the November 2024 presidential election has been a devastating shock not just for us but also for millions of Americans and our long-standing allies across the globe. How could this have happened a second time? How was it possible that so many Americans voted for hatred, bigotry, misogyny, racism, dehumanization of the less fortunate, and a blatantly obvious course toward destroying that which is quintessentially American, our democracy?

 With the inauguration day of the president-elect in January 2025, devastation started to take its course. This is not overly dramatic; this is not a conspiracy effort; we are not overreacting. We have just lived through one of the most stressful year of our lives. We are watching a fascist government following its playbook, Project 2025, just like Adolf Hitler did in the 1930s, leading Germany towards the darkest chapter in its history, World War II, and the Holocaust.

 We talked with each other, attended local political meetings, and went to Asheville, Hendersonville, Rutherfordton, and beyond to attend rallies and town hall meetings. It felt good to know that we were not alone in our pain over the destruction of our country and the direct results we started feeling in our communities. But it wasn’t enough. We decided that it is our RESPONSIBILITY to do more in our community. Values and great ideas mean nothing if they are not followed up with action! We are not interested in being heroes. We do not think that we are better than other people. As a matter of fact, we are scared, and we fight the risk of feeling overwhelmed at times. But we also realize that we want to be able to meet ourselves in the mirror and know that we did not look away. Women are threatened, immigrants are threatened, healthcare is threatened, the poorest of the poor are threatened, and our birthrights for freedom, safety, and prosperity are threatened.

 The warning signs were there for a long time. Both parties failed America, and we, the citizens, failed it too! A democracy is only as strong as its citizens actively participating. America is a wonderful country with magnificent beauty and potential. We look back on some very dark chapters, but also a history of powerful grassroots & civil rights movements. For America and each community to be great, we need to embrace all parts of our history and learn from them! It’s our turn now to join forces in transforming our country’s democracy into the vision our founding fathers truly had for all of us -not just a privileged few. This is why we decided to form Indivisible Polk Foothills.  We are a non-partisan organization, and our doors are wide open to everyone who wishes to be part of Polk County civic activism to safe our democracy and make it stronger.
