Indivisible Polk Foothills January 2026

Indivisible Polk Foothills Gathering, 02/03/2026, UCC Tryon, 210 Melrose Ave., Tryon 28782 NEWSLETTER
With the vision of democracy at its core, activism can take many forms: Attending rallies, educating & informing, discussing problems and solutions while hiking, reading relevant books in a book club, watching relevant movies, participating in voter registration & canvassing, learning to separate facts from lies, making phone calls to representatives, & serving community members in need. Activism wears many faces. We have plenty of ideas & learned from other organizations. We offer a safe, positive environment that encourages people to join us, regardless of age, background, or party affiliation. Everybody is welcome! If any of the ideas we propose excite you in particular, or if you bring your own ideas, please consider becoming a leader of that activity!
That is the Indivisible Way! 💪💪💪
DEFEND INSTITUTIONS: It is institutions that help us preserve decency. They need our help as well. Do not speak of "our institutions" unless you make them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions do not protect themselves. They fall one after the other unless each is defended from the beginning. So choose an institution you care about -a court, a newspaper, a law, a labor union - and take its side. - Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny
Keeping Our Immigrant Neighbors Safe
With the threats posed by ICE, indiscriminately threatening immigrants with deportation, we organize and participate in community efforts to HELP. Please check our website and newsletter regularly to learn about potential training & volunteer opportunities. Find suggested resources here.
Social Gatherings
IPF offers two social gatherings per month. The focus is on community & sharing. Aside from the joys of socializing, each meeting either features a speaker or a presentation, followed by group work and discussion. Together, we will empower each other to serve our community, and actively engage in the process of rebuilding our democracy.
No Kings Rallies & More
Demonstrating against injustices, threats toward minorities, & blatant abuses of power is a constitutional right, as well as a responsibility of the people. IPF will plan & organize rallies, or partner with other local groups, for a greater impact!
Volunteering to help those community members hit hardest by the reckless cuts of the current administration is a must-do of peaceful activism. Find suggested resources here.
Reading books that relate to our current political situation (non-fiction or fiction) can be a great way to learn, inform, & share. Lots of people love book clubs! Why not join this one and be an activist! Find suggested resources here.
Elections are the people's voice within a functioning democracy. Our vote is intended to be our power. Voter education & registration are essential parts of activism, and we will do our part. Find suggested resources here.
DEFEND FREE SPEECH: Recalling how "millions and millions of people" protested against his show being taken off air, Kimmel praised Americans for their efforts to "support the right to a free expression of speech."-Jimmy Kimmel
In a world where fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories have completely distorted our realities, it is crucially important to seek out factually correct news resources. It is our responsibility to do so, & to be very mindful of what & how we share information. Find suggested resources here.
Writing postcards to request that our representatives do the job they were elected to do courageously & honestly has been hugely popular for a long time. So, let's keep doing it. Activism does not always have to be loud and in the open. It is an effective way to make our voices heard!
Here in Polk County, we are surrounded by beautiful nature. Yet even nature & our National Parks, world-renowned landmarks of the American experience, are under attack by the current administration. Forming an Indivisible Polk Foothills hiking club (no worries, we can start with some leisurely walks😄) helps to relax, connect with nature, & speak freely with like-minded fellow activists!
Activism only works & keeps us motivated if we have a vision & a plan for turning that vision into reality. By meeting, talking, listening, learning, and discovering our community & its surroundings, we become clearer about what went wrong & and how we want to do it better in the future. We all share this responsibility. Finding the right balance between focused work, socializing, supporting each other, and not losing sight of the beauty & joy that also surrounds us, we can contribute to saving our democracy!
